- W2056001176 abstract "Assessment of patient satisfaction following miscarriage has not been systematic and has largely overlooked the personal significance women attach to the quality of care they receive. In the light of limited patient-oriented research to guide decision makers on effective miscarriage services, the present study aims to evaluate, from women's own perspective, the health care received within a large General Hospital in the Midlands of the UK following an early miscarriage. Interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) (Smith et al. 1997) was used to elucidate participants' appraisal of service provisions following a miscarriage. Semi-structured interviews were carried out with 6 women who had been treated following a miscarriage at an Early Pregnancy Assessment Unit. Five themes emerged from the data as important elements shaping participants' healthcare experience: (1) At the antenatal clinic: comparing self with other pregnant women, (2) EPAU: a special place to go, (3) D&C: why am I left on my own? (4) Need for explanation, (5) Need for sensitive after care services. Both shortcomings and advantages of the existing miscarriage services were identified. The interpretation of participants' discourses reflected that satisfaction with the health care was most likely when it was delivered within a humanistic environment which promoted interpersonal trust, respect and understanding of their feelings for the lost pregnancy together with support, long-term accessibility to health professionals, and clear information regarding their reproductive status. A shared opinion was expressed that the specialised nursing staff at the EPAU could best serve a woman's needs following miscarriage. The findings suggest that miscarriage services could be enhanced by adopting more patient oriented approaches." @default.
