- W2056019119 abstract "To assess the effect of portion size formats of food frequency questionnaire(FFQ) on classification of subjects, well-trained interviewers asked 348 adults in a rural area of Korea to describe usual portion size for 87 food items. To calculate nutrient intakes, three different portion size formats were used; 1) quantitative portion size (Q_PS) format, 2) categorical portion size (C_PS) format, and 3) single median portion size (S_PS) format. There were correlations of >0.80 between nutrient intakes estimated by the three formats. For several foods, however, low correlation coefficients between S_PS and other methods were found, eg. <0.4 for cooked rice. Classifying subjects to quartile of nutrient intakes, we observed the highest kappa value (0.71 for males and 0.68 for females) between Q_PS and C_PS and the lowest value (0.45 for males and 0.50 for females) between Q_PS and S_PS. The kappa values were lower for energy (k=0.59 for males and 0.40 for females) and carbohydrate intake (k=0.43 for males and 0.20 for females) even between Q_PS and C_PS. The agreements in the extreme quartiles by Q_PS and S_PS were less than 70%, and particularly lower for carbohydrate intake (approximately 50%). The differences of portion sizes of cooked rice resulted in these disagreements. These findings suggest that the portion size probe is important for food items of which between-persons variation might be determined by portion size rather than by food frequency." @default.
