- W2056332511 abstract "This paper summarises the important methods and devices used at optical frequencies for the major processes in communication systems—generation, modulation, transmission, regeneration, and detection. The background theory of the processes is dealt with briefly and qualitatively in order to pose the problems involved, and to show how far present technology is capable of providing solutions. Where possible, the references have been chosen with a view to directing the reader who wishes to delve into the subject to general articles with more detailed bibliographies, rather than with the idea of compiling an exhaustive list. Cautious optimism is justified on the development of wide-bandwidth optical communication systems. Devices with satifactory performance have been developed to generate, modulate and detect radiation at such wavelengths. At longer wavelengths, modulators need further development work. Heterodyne detection is not easy to apply at any optical wavelength because of stringent coherence requirements. A cheap, lowloss, guided transmission system is required for terrestrial use, but is still not available. Regeneration is also a problem because high gain to high power levels is difficult." @default.
