- W2056380532 abstract "A thermal cycling technique which allows grain refinement of an Al-40 wt.% Zn alloy from approximately 400 μm to less than 25 μm has been developed. The process consists of annealing a fully precipitated alloy in the α phase field. The time and temperature dependence of the grain size indicated a value of 0.37 at 402 °C for the exponent, n , in the general equation for the grain growth law D = kt n . The value of n was found to decrease from 0.37 to 0.32 when the solution annealing temperature was lowered from 402 to 332 °C. The grain boundary migration rate was found to be temperature dependent, suggesting an apparent activation energy O g = 11 ± 0.5 kcal/mole. This value is approximately half of the activation energy for diffusion of zinc in pure aluminium. In order to achieve grain refinement in this alloy various multiple thermal treatments have been employed. It was observed that during normal grain growth in Al-40Zn alloy, growth continued to larger grain size when using single cycle annealing than during multi-cycle thermal treatment. The results were found to be in reasonable aggreement with a recently proposed grain boundary migration theory." @default.
