- W2056414097 abstract "A versatile electro-optical sensor provides feedback for controls-structures interactionEverett Coffelt, Curtis SchroederBall Aerospace Systems GroupElectro-Optics/Cryogenics DivisionABSTRACTThe importance of remote sensing for high-rate, high-accuracy position feedback in the control of largeflexible structures is gaining wide recognition. Less obvious is the equally important use of these sensorsfor target tracking, proximity sensing, systems identification, and other control-related applications. Theremote attitude measurement sensor (RAMS) can be easily adapted to satisfy each of these applications byselecting the optical components to meet specific measurement needs. The RAMS system has been con-figured to accept many different lens/target combinations and thereby provide versatility, ease of use, andreliable performance. Examples of typical applications are provided, along with descriptions of the sensorconfigurations and performance. Recent experiences in RAMS hardware development and testing are alsodescribed, including the use of RAMS for the Control, Astrophysics, and Structures Experiment in Space(CASES) Advanced Development Facility (ADF) and the controls-structures interaction demonstrationexperiment (C-SIDE).1. BACKGROUNDThe RAMS system was developed to satisfy the advanced sensor needs of large space structures (LSS),controls-structures interaction (CSI) applications for spacecraft, aligning spacebased scientific instrumentsand large planar antennas, controlling instrument/spacecraft interface structures, and stabilizing pointingand tracking systems. As part of a system providing active control of space structures, RAMS providesremote, unobtrusive position sensing of numerous points on the structure. Data obtained from the sensorcan be used to close a control loop or to characterize the structures, thereby aiding the design process forfuture space structures.2. SYSTEM DESCRIPTIONThe RAMS system is an electro-optical, non-contact set of sensors, capable of providing high resolutionangular or linear displacement data from targets attached to the structure. Targets may be retroreflective(passive) or light-emitting diodes (active). The image of the target is focused onto a linear CCD array andimaged over several pixels. The centroid of the image is defined and its position is determined to within2% of a pixel. The system can be configured to be a 2- or 3-axis measurement device with a sensor foreach axis, and common controller electronics that provide analog or digital output.Recently, two RAMS systems were developed for the Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC) AdvancedDevelopment Facility (ADF). Testing of these sensors has demonstrated resolution to <10 urad at a targetdistance of 30 m regardless of the type of target used. This system is also capable of monitoring the targetmotion over a range of 35 milliradians. For a target at 30-rn distance from the sense head, this translatesto a lateral translation of in. and a resolution of <" @default.
