Although it has been employed in numerous clinical studies since 1962, no one has studied the linguistic properties of the commands in this task. What we have shown is the specific details of how linguistic complexity is manipulated in the Token Test. On the well-established premise that variation in linguistic complexity will be reflected by variation in language acquisition, we administered the Token Test to a group of normal children of different age levels. We found that the significant increase in complexity in part 5, measured by higher error scores in performance of the tasks, was due to the use of an overt instrumental phrase which previously had been implicit or covert. A similar pattern of performance was noted in a group of aphasic patients as well as in a carefully matched group of socio-economically disadvantaged children, which leads support to our analysis. Bien qu'il ait été utilisé dans de nombreuses études cliniques depuis 1962, personne n'a étudié les propriétés linguistiques des ordres de cette épreuve. Das signifikante Anwachsen dieser Komplexität im Teil 5, welches sich durch höhere Fehlerpunktzahlen bei der Durchführung der Testaufgaben zu erkennen gab, konnte auf die Verwendung eines instrumentalen Ausdrucks zurückgeführt werden, der vorher stillschweigend impliziert oder verdeckt war.
