- W2056519457 abstract "Abstract This article summarizes and reviews the literature concerning the often, but erroneously, presumed relationship between homosexuality and the sexual coercion of children as it relates to public policy. After clarifying a variety of conceptual issues, the article refutes the belief that the general public endorses the myth that gay men sexually abuse children, argues for a clear distinction between sexual behavior and sexual identity, and critically reviews the empirical literature concerning childhood sexual coercion and gay identity development in boys. This analysis supports a variety of policy relevant conclusions. Sexual orientation, gay or straight, is not a good predictor of erotic interest in or sexual behavior with children. Most gay men did not experience sexual coercion as children. Regardless of sexual orientation, coercive sexual experiences in childhood may be related to engaging in a wider array of sexual behaviors in adulthood. However, a relationship between childhood sexual coercion and adult sexual orientation has not been demonstrated by empirical research. The article closes with a discussion of these conclusions and their implications for public policy." @default.
