- W2056520219 abstract "Two patients with both duodenal ulcer and cancer of the stomach are presented. The rarity of this association is illustrated by the fact that these were the only cases showing this association in a series of over 6,000 barium swallow and meal examinations in which 1,761 duodenal ulcers and 272 carcinomas of the stomach were demonstrated. On the basis of this and other observations, it is suggested that the presence of a duodenal ulcer protects the patient against the development of a carcinoma of the stomach, and it is postulated that this protection may be related to the level of acid secretion by the stomach. A review of cases with this association showed that the majority of the cancers were either ulcers or fundal growths. Two patients with both duodenal ulcer and cancer of the stomach are presented.
