- W2056534014 abstract "Abstract Various behavioral responses were appraised in a situation in which male Swiss mice could initiate continuous hypothalamic or ventral tegmental stimulation at various intensities by pressing a lever at one end of a box (ON-lever) and stop this stimulation by pressing a lever at the other end of the box (OFF-lever). Two groups of sites (A and B) could be distinguished. At sites of group A, the mean time during which the animal remained stimulated (ST) before interrupting the stimulation was longer than the mean time during which the animal remained unstimulated (NST) before restarting the stimulation. The animals of this group spent more time near the ON-lever (ON-zone) than near the OFF-lever (OFF-zone) and made many inefficient ON-lever presses. As the stimulation intensity increased, the frequency of shuttling from the ON- to the OFF-zone increased more rapidly than the efficient ON-OFF responses. Conversely, in the second group (group B), ST values were shorter than NST values; the time spent in the ON-zone was shorter than the time spent in the OFF-zone. The animals made many inefficient OFF-lever presses and the shuttling from the ON- to the OFF-zone was almost always associated with efficient ON-OFF responses whatever stimulation intensity. The results are discussed in terms of the relative rewarding or aversive properties of the stimulation." @default.
