- W2056548843 abstract "It is time for celebration as we look back at the progress we have made in the Asia Pacific Medical Education Conference (APMEC) series we initiated in 2003. We have grown from a local meeting of 250 participants to a regional conference attended by more than 700 medical educationalists from over 40 countries. Indeed, the theme specially chosen for our 10th Anniversary Conference ‘In Celebration of Innovation and Scholarship in Medical and Health Professional Education- Trends, Issues, Priorities, Strategies (TIPS)’ clearly reflects the joyous spirit of this conference. Yet, it is also an opportune time for us to seriously take stock of the global educational landscape fast beckoning us to consider the need to change what and how our medical and health professional students need to learn in a fast changing world. Bligh and Parsell (2000) clearly pointed out that ‘The central mission of medical [health professional] education is to improve the quality of healthcare delivered by doctors [health professionals]…what doctors [health professionals] do, and how and when they do it depends on the quality of medical [health professional] education. We need to get it right’. Medical and health professional educators across the globe have, over the years, endeavoured hard to get the education right for their students. However, the Lancet publication (2010) on the ‘EDUCATION OF HEALTH PROFESSIONALS FOR THE 21st CENTURY’ (The Lancet Commissions), emphasised that ‘Professional education has not kept pace with these challenges largely because of fragmented, outdated, and static curricula that produced ill-equipped graduates’, and further pointed out that ‘…20th century educational strategies…are unfit to tackle 21st century challenges’. We need to take heed of the authoritative sentiments expressed and chart new directions to educate today’s medical and health professional students to become tomorrow’s competent caring and ethical practitioners with capability of delivering 21st century healthcare needs. Education needs to equip students with new enabling competencies to function in the 21st century as ‘…service providers…caregivers, communicators and educators, team members, managers, leaders and policy makers’ (Lancet, 2010). The education of medical and health professional students must therefore progressively nurture habits of mind, action and behaviour towards this goal and, in the educational process, transform (shape) minds, hands and hearts to be capable of delivering 21st century healthcare. We hope the various educational activities we have planned in the conference programme will serve this primary aim and, as always, we are most grateful to our invited speakers who continue to share their expertise, experience, leadership and wisdom in guiding participants to have deeper insights into the educational pathway they should creatively adopt and adapt in the context of the needs of their respective institutions and countries. We also hope that you will continue to enjoy and benefit from reading the articles published in this special supplement of Medical Education and we thank you for your continued support for our APMEC. Please join us now ‘In Celebration of Innovation and Scholarship in Medical and Health Professional Education’ in a global world of changing demands and challenges in healthcare delivery for the 21st century. In this 10th Anniversary, we also wish to express our deep gratitude to and categorically state that without teamwork from our support staff and colleagues, we would never have been able to climb the ladder of success as smoothly as we have experienced. A big thank you to everyone." @default.
