- W2056552348 abstract "Jean-Marc Largeaud's history of the battle of Waterloo is less about the event and more about its place in modern memory. The book surveys nearly two centuries of reflection on the battle's meaning in the politics of French culture. As a study of the fortunes of the memory of an episode that marked the downfall of France's once great empire, Waterloo has had a particular appeal, for it permits the exploration of the ambiguities of its remembrance as a “glorious defeat.” The vanquishing of Napoleon Bonaparte's army at Waterloo signaled the definitive end of French hegemony in Europe. But its memory lingered in French popular culture, and over time it was transfigured into the idealized image of a courageous last stand, a touchstone of the resilience needed for national renewal. Waterloo, experienced by its soldiers as the existential suffering of agonizing combat, would be remembered by succeeding generations as a disembodied emblem of devotion to duty, loyalty, and patriotism against all odds. So its lessons would be enshrined in popular histories, the schoolbooks of children, romantic novels, and the ritual ceremonies of national commemorations. In these many ways, the losses of the battlefield found recompense in the psychological consolation of memorable lessons for posterity. Ironically, Largeaud points out, this “remembering” of the event received its most grandiose homage during the Third Republic, not the Second Empire." @default.
