A broader perspective suggests that it may be food, not fuel, which is our dominant concern by the 1990's. Rapidly increasing demand for American exports will continue to grow into the next century according to all population forecasts, and it is questionable whether sufficient agricultural lands remain to be put into production to meet this demand for food. Current trends in biomass conversion (especially alcohol production), coal mining practice, and synthetic fules development are studied with regard to the competition between food and fuel. In each instance it is seen that further development of these energy resources will impact farm acreage availability and American food production adversely. In the last analysis the choice between food and fuel depends on ethical considerations as to America's responsibilities toward an increasingly food-poor world." @default.
