- W2056570560 abstract "A theory of media evolution is proposed, based upon evolutionary epistemology and McLuhanist media studies. The problem arises of the inability of subjects to critically assess the effects of the media technology upon which they depend for a clear picture of the world. Media encode the world in representations which, to be effective, require a non-voluntary suspension of disbelief. This precludes access to knowledge of the medium's encoding process and therefore to an understanding of its pervasive disruptive effect upon culture. In order to demonstrate the continuity of biological knowledge systems with technological ones, an evolutionary epistemology must account for the ostensibly paradoxical utility of such “handicapped” knowledge in the development of adaptive media. An examination of the psychological motives involved in technological adoption shows it entails both the deployment of the medium in a culture and our acceptance of the represented substitution for the world that the medium offers. Donald Campbell's “hierarchy of vicariousness” is used to account for how knowledge growth at the cultural level, which media represent, also means greater uncertainty for the individual knower. Media evolution, like biological evolution, represents the simulation and represented substitution of aspects of the environment which represent problems for a species or culture. This process is organized at both the individual and transpersonal cultural level; both of which are autonomous yet interact. When problems arise owing to the blind spot any medium creates, a new medium emerges which represents the previously hidden environment, thus making it communicable and controllable, but also changing the environment in which that new knowledge is gained." @default.
