- W2056585028 abstract "In gauge theories based on quarks with flavour and colour, ]factionally charged quarks usually interact via massless colour gluons. There is a conjecture that the infra-red behaviour of such theories may provide a mechanism for colour confinement. One of the reasons to study these theories is the lack of experimental evidence of fractionally charged quarks (1) (at least one of which has to be stable, by charge conservation). The second possibility, which has been studied up to now, is the theory with integer charged quarks and massive colour gluons (2). The assumption of colour confinement is now not necessary, since integer charged quarks need not be stable. In this case, there are some arguments in favour of low-mass gluon (a.4). Experimental data concerning the existence of the neutral-colour gauge meson with low mass have an unexplored region between 1.34 and 1.8 GeV; were it not present there, its mass could not be below 7 GeV (4). In that case it would not be so easy to understand the known size of hadrons, and in order to explain the suppression of colour excitation in leptoproduction at present energies, one has to assume a sufficiently high colour threshold. In this note we want to emphasize the possibility that massive colour gluons can also be present in gauge theories with fractionally charged quarks. The lack of experimental evidence of quarks up to now (1) can be accounted for by assuming them to be very heavy objects. This has to be compared with permanent colour confinement, the mechanism of which has not been demonstrated (4). Our aim is to consider the possibility of putt ing together ]factionally charged quarks with massive colour gluons, with special at tention to the basic problems of quark binding and hadron spectroscopy. The basic ideas o] the model. The data on hadron spectroscopy indicate that the dynamics o] quarks inside hadrons is nonrelativistic (5). This will enable us to perform" @default.
