- W2056615084 abstract "Little is known regarding sex differences in the decline of exercise performance at altitude, as most studies have focused on declines in maximal aerobic capacity in males only. PURPOSE: To investigate the role of sex differences in declines of peak exercise capacity (Wpeak) and performance at simulated moderate (MA; 2100 m, 16.2 % FIO2) and high (HA; 3900 m, 12.8% FIO2) altitudes. METHODS: Eleven male and 10 female subjects completed Wpeak trials at sea level (SL) and HA. Following familiarization at SL and HA, subjects completed experimental trials (1 h acclimatization followed by 30 min at 55% of Wpeak + 15-km time trial) at MA and HA in randomized, counterbalanced, and single blind fashion. RESULTS: Wpeak declined from SL to HA by ∼19% in men (331 ± 11 to 267 ± 8W; p<.001) and women (253 ± 9 to 205 ± 6W; p<.001). 15-km completion times declined from SL to MA and HA for men (25.6 ± 0.5 vs. 26.4 ± 0.4 and 28.2 ± 0.5min; p=.001 and p<.001) and women (29.5 ± 0.7 vs. 30.0 ± 0.5 and 32.6 ± 0.6min; p=.317 and p<.001). Men maintained 5-6% higher relative workloads (p=.032) during the time trial than women at all altitudes (71.2 ± 2.3 vs. 64.8 ± 2.4%, 73.5 ± 1.4 vs. 68.5 ± 1.4%, 67.9± 2.1 vs. 62.2 ± 2.2% of altitude-specific Wpeak at SL, MA, and HA, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: Men and women exhibit similar declines in Wpeak and exercise performance across a wide range of altitudes. At SL, MA, and HA men appear to self-select higher relative workloads during 15-km time trial performance than similarly trained women. Supported by the World Anti-Doping Agency" @default.
