- W2056784163 abstract "The prevalence of bacterial resistance to isoniazid and to PAS in patients with acute pulmonary tuberculosis submitted to successive chemotherapy trials in East Africa between 1953 and 1959 has been studied. Organisms cultured from single sputum specimens obtained before the start of the allocated chemotherapy were tested for their drug sensitivity, using standardized techniques. The findings showed an increase in prevalence of initial isoniazid resistance. None was found in 1953–55, but by 1957 the prevalence was 16·0 per cent; the trend is statistically significant at the 2 per cent level. Initial PAS resistance was also absent in 1953–55, and the prevalence was 12·9 per cent in 1957, but for bacteriological reasons these figures are more difficult to interpret, and the trend does not attain statistical significance. Although the patients were submitted to the various trials on the presumption that they had not received previous treatment, there is evidence that some had indeed received chemotherapy without admitting it. Because of these doubts, it is uncertain how many of the patients with resistant organisms were infected by other patients excreting resistant organisms. This high and unexpected prevalence of isoniazid- and PAS-resistant strains in East Africa emphasizes the need for giving tuberculosis chemotherapy in adequate forms for adequate periods." @default.
