- W2056917264 abstract "This study compares the morphology and development site of trophozoites of two gill parasitic species of Myxobolus, one from Catostomus commersoni in Nova Scotia and one from Notemigonus crysoleucas in New Brunswick. Trophozoites of the former are embedded in tissue lying between the bases of two adjacent primary lamellae. They are round, saclike structures full of mature spores. Developmental phases aggregate near the peripheral inner surface. The trophozoite's outer edge is bound firmly to a mitotically active, single-celled layer that is identified as a modified capillary wall. Beyond this is a host capsule consisting of loose connective tissue, eosinophilic granulocytes, and epithelial cells. Trophozoites of the species of Myxobolus from N. crysoleucas develop in the distal half of a primary lamella. They are irregularly shaped, internally compartmentalized sacs. Each minute compartment contains a single spore. Developmental phases are distributed throughout the trophozoite's interior and their growth within a germinal matrix forms the compartments. Remnants of secondary lamellae pass through the trophozoite's interior and, although the original outer epithelium is absent, the remaining blood vessels still function in blood-cell transport. The trophozoite is surrounded by a loose connective tissue capsule. The study also compares the overall form of the two types of trophozoites." @default.
