- W2056962715 abstract "Kinetic and thermodynamic aspects of vapour growth are discussed and the importance of the surface reactions as rate determining steps is particularly stressed. Both sublimation and chemical transport of EuS have been studied from this point of view. Thermogravimetric measurements of the equilibrium vapour pressures of EuS in the temperature range 1700–2200°C using Knudsen cells have been made for the first time. The enthalpy of sublimation is 100 kcal/ mole. Free evaporation measurements (Langmuir) show that the activation energy of vaporisation is higher, 110 kcal/mole and the Langmuir vapour pressure much lower. The evaporation coefficient is therefore 3.3–6.0×10−2 and the vaporisation kinetics are rate determining. Morphological evidence from the EuS crystals grown by sublimation indicate that here also kinetics are rate determining. Electronmicroscopic investigations showed that at high temperatures a transition from singular to non-singular faces takes place for EuS. The chemical transport of EuS has been possible for the first time, using a high pressure, high temperature chemical transport and starting material Eu3S4. There is some indirect evidence that a complex polysulfide of the type EuxMoySz might be the transporting agent. Both growth kinetics and interface morphology show that kinetics and not diffusion is the rate determining process. During these investigations, no evidence of constitutional supercooling from the vapour phase was found." @default.
