Sir Stokes showed that fluorite (fluorspar) and uranium glass had fluorescent properties that enabled these compounds to convert UV light, invisible to the human eye, into one of a longer wavelength visible to the human eye. Light is emitted when an electron, previously lifted to a higher-energy state by excitation light, drops back to its lower ground state (Fig 1A). The difference in wavelength between the excitation and emission light is called the Stokes shift (Fig 1B) and forms the basis for fluorescencebased assays." @default.
