- W2057291263 abstract "Summary Two experimental studies were conducted to investigate the perception of an aggressor (Study II) and his victim (Study I) as affected by their friendly or unfriendly relationship and the victim's retaliation. Both studies had a 2 (S's sex) x 2 (friendly vs. unfriendly aggressor-victim relationship) x 2 (retaliating vs. nonretaliating victim) factorial design with 20 Ss per cell and 160 Ss (Bombay University students) per study. Ss read a passage describing an incident of aggression and its consequence and then rated the victim (Study I) or the aggressor (Study II) on four seven-point scales representing intelligence, morality, adjustment, and likability. The non-retaliating victim received more favorable ratings than the retaliating victim, especially from female Ss or within a friendly relationship. The unfriendly aggressor tended to receive less favorable ratings than the friendly aggressor, especially from male Ss. The findings suggest that aggression against a friend or liked person is perceived as less reprehensible and more justifiable than aggression against a disliked person." @default.
