- W2057367637 abstract "The geometrical arrangements of muscle fibers have been shown to affect the joint force production. In the present study, three dimensional (3D) arrangement of fascicles in the human gasctocnemius medialis (MG) was determined in vivo. The ultrasonic images (SSD-2000, Aloka, Jpn; wave frequency 7.5MHz) of MG in six male subjects were reconstructed three-dimensionally with the aid of a tracking device (ISOTRAK, POLHEMUS, USA). From the reconstructed 3D images, muscle thickness (Tm), the length of fascicles (Lf), angle of fascicles in relation to the direction of the achilles tendon in the sagital (Afs) and frontal (Aff) planes were determined for the proximo-distal as well as medial-Hateral parts of MG. The 3D pennation angle (Ap) was determined from Afs and Aff. The Lf was almost uniform (58 mm) throughout MG. The more proximal the sites, the larger the Af and Ap and the thicker the Tm. At the muscle belly Afs and Aff were 24 and 3 deg, and Tm was 23 mm; at the medial and distal ends, Afs and Aff were 19 and 9 deg, and Tm was 17 mm, respectively. Because muscle fibers are packed parallelly within a fascicle (Loeb et al. 1987), and larger Ap causes greater loss in force transmission from muscle fibers to the tendon, the efficiency of force transmission is inhomogenous at different sites of MG. Distal portion of MG would therefore have a higher efficiency compared to that of the muscle belly." @default.
