- W2057381870 abstract "In the early years of its evolution, the INTELSAT system, the grandfather of most commercial satellite systems, was technology driven (i.e., can it be done?). More recently, economic factors have become the major driver in deciding what kindandhow many spacecrafttoorder(i.e., what will it cost the users?). This necessitates shedding light on the connection between cost and communications performance, including all technical factors that bear on the outcome. Cost entails the financial outlays over the lifetime of the satellite series; communications performance includes the type, capacity, and quality of service of the satellite system and earth stations, again over the satellite series' lifetime. One simple measure of the cost/performance ratio is the cost in kilo dollars necessary for 1 year of operation at adigital transmission rate of 1 Mbit/s. The methodology presented herein links transmission capacity for both a power-limited and a bandwidth-limited link first to satellite parameters (payload in terms of mass and e.i.r.p.), then to the spacecraft bus mass and lifetime (amount of fuel and years of operation), and then to launch costs. Finally, earth station and operational costs are added to this methodology. The evolution of the INTELSAT system is traced in terms of this ratio of kilo dollars to megabits per second per year of operation. Future developments are discussed in light of their potential efficiency, as assessed using this gauge." @default.
