- W2057446546 abstract "To the Editor. In 1994 we published a letter in both Pediatrics(1994;93:351) and in the Canadian Medical Association Journal (1994;150:326) seeking brief reports of local, direct injury to the sciatic nerve associated with the administration of childhood vaccines in the buttocks of infants and children. The only report of injury we received came from an attorney and concerned a 2-year-old boy with “sciatic and peroneal nerve injury” temporally associated with hepatitis B administered either in the thigh or buttock; the site was uncertain. The lack of response to our solicitation along with the absence of published reports of direct nerve injury associated with the injection of modern childhood vaccines in the buttock is, of course, not evidence that such practice is safe. However, it does suggest that the hazard of administering vaccines in the upper outer quadrant of the buttock is not well-established and may have been presumed based on analogy to well-documented sciatic injury related to the administration of antibiotics and antisera at this site." @default.
