- W2057544904 abstract "Some consequences of the interaction of a nonlocal photon with a constant $E$, $H$ field are considered. The interaction is shown to vanish in the limit of local fields independently of the magnitude of the coupling constant $g$, so that results obtained could be traced directly to the assumption of a nonlocal field. An exact solution for the nonlocal field is obtained as a sum of a nonlocal plane waves containing the four-vector ${q}_{ensuremath{mu}}$. It is shown that this four-vector in conjunction with the coupling constant plays two roles. In one it is involved in the expression for an electric dipole moment: $gmathrm{q}$ and in the other in an expression for a magnetic dipole with moment: $frac{g}{2}frac{(mathrm{q}ifmmodetimeselsetexttimesfi{}mathrm{k})}{|k|}$, where $frac{mathrm{k}}{|k|}$ is the propagation vector. This identification gives significance to the $C$ numbers, ${q}_{s}$ appearing in the theory. The equivalent mass $ensuremath{mu}$, averaged over orientations of q for which ${ensuremath{mu}}^{2}>0$, turns out to be of order $4.0ifmmodetimeselsetexttimesfi{}{10}^{ensuremath{-}12}{(frac{ensuremath{gamma}B}{ensuremath{lambda}})}^{frac{1}{2}}$ electron masses, where $ensuremath{gamma}$ is the number of Bohr magnetons; $|gmathrm{q}|frac{mathrm{mc}}{mathrm{he}}$, $ensuremath{lambda}$ is the wavelength, and $B$ is an upper limit to the magnitude of the external field in Gaussian units. An order of magnitude measure of the optical properties of the region containing the constant $E$, $H$ field which affects the nonlocal photon is $|nensuremath{-}1|=3.2ifmmodetimeselsetexttimesfi{}{10}^{ensuremath{-}4}(ensuremath{lambda}ensuremath{gamma}B)$, where $n$ is an upper limit to the index of refraction. For pronounced measurable effects, say, $|nensuremath{-}1|ensuremath{approx}0.1$ implies that $frac{〈ensuremath{mu}〉}{m}$ attains a value of $frac{{10}^{ensuremath{-}10}}{ensuremath{lambda}}$ electron mass." @default.
