- W2057682792 abstract "We have attempted to determine the extent to which individual physical differences explain the response to graded central hypovolemia. It has been suggested that body size, especially height, is a predictor of orthostatic tolerance, but this has not been confirmed with a large sample size. PURPOSE: To determine which anthropometric measures explain the variability associated with orthostatic tolerance in the general population. METHODS: One hundred participants (33 females, 67 males, mean ± SD, age: 22.4 ± 2.6 y; height: 175.5 ± 9.7 cm; weight: 75.6 ± 15.5 kg; body fat: 15.0 ± 8.7%; BMI: 24.5 ± 4.1 kg/m2; BSA: 1.9 ± 0.2 m2; estimated VO2 max: 52.5 ± 12.5 ml/kg/min) underwent graded lower body negative pressure (LBNP) to presyncope. Tolerance was determined using two indices, the cumulative stress index (CSI) and the LBNP tolerance index (LTI). RESULTS: When race, gender, age, height, weight, body fat, BMI, BSA, and estimated VO2max were entered into a regression equation for tolerance expresed by the CSI, 24.8% of the variability in tolerance was explained. When stepwise regression was conducted, gender was the only variable entered with an R2 = 13.9. When all the variables mentioned above were entered into the regression equation with tolerance expressed by the LTI, 31.2% of the variability in tolerance was explained. When evaluated stepwise, gender was the only variable entered with an R2 = 23.5. CONCLUSION: Size did not enter into the regression equation and does not appear to be a good predictor of orthostatic tolerance. Gender appears to explain only 14–24% of the variability associated with orthostatic tolerance. Mechanistic differences are mor likely responsible for the variability in tolerance and should be investigated further." @default.
