- W2057805723 abstract "Step`anos, bishop of the large province of Siwnik` in north-eastern Armenia, was one of the most noted scholars of his time. His exact date of birth is unknown, but details of his career are given by several later historians—though not without legendary accretions. He was a pupil of Solomon, the learned abbot of Makenoc` south-west of Lake Sevan. His teaching career began at the episcopal monastery of Siwnik`, which had already gained fame as a centre for the study of biblical exegesis. Between 712 and 718 he was in Constantinople, where, in association with David, consul and kinarios, he translated the Pseudo-Dionysian corpus as well as Gregory of Nyssa's De opificio hominis and Nemesius of Emesa's De natura hominis. After his return to Armenia Step`anos composed commentaries on Job, Ezechiel, and the Four Evangelists. At some point he made a second journey to Constantinople and supposedly on to Rome, though the thirteenth-century accounts of the trip to Rome are fanciful in the extreme. In 728 he was back in Dvin, then the seat of the Armenian patriarch, and soon thereafter was consecrated bishop of Siwnik`. He died in 735, supposedly murdered by a woman whose sinful life he had reprimanded in vain. In addition to his translations and biblical commentaries Step`anos is also credited with several theological treatises, a commentary on the Grammar of Dionysius Thrax, and liturgical writings including the subject of the monograph under review, his commentary on the Armenian daily office." @default.
