- W2057933864 abstract "Abstract Research in sweat gland function has been intensively undertaken in recent years by investigators in various fields of medical science, in different ways and under different experimental conditions. It has resulted in some contradictory opinions and misunderstandings. One refers sweat composition to that of blood plasma, as if the latter were its direct substrate. The varying value of NaCl concentration in sweat as compared to the constant value in internal body fluids is emphasized. Changes in NaCl concentration during thermal sweating depend little on either the gland's initial capacity to elaborate the osmolarity gradient or the sweating rate. The factor which moves extracellular fluid across the glandular wall remains unknown. Histological and ultrastructural studies of sweat glands before and during thermal sweating provide information concerning the manner of transfer of extracellular fluid across the glandular cells. Hormonal control (antidiuretic, adrenal, and thyroid hormones) of sweat gland function seems to be rudimentary. It is suggested that the opposite changes in sodium and potassium concentrations in sweat, compared to extracellular fluid, are independent and do not reflect an ion exchange controlled by hormonal mechanisms. Sodium and potassium isotope studies support this view. To call the sweat gland a miniaturized kidney is not justified." @default.
