- W2057942550 abstract "Abstract o (1) Levels of Krebs cycle intermediates and related metabolites in the brain tissue of 15-day-old Gunn rats (j/j, j/+, +/+) and Wistar rats were determined 1 h after a single intraperitoneal injection of a bilirubin competitor, novobiocin. (2) One h after novobiocin administration in Gunn rats (j/j), a significant reduction of serum bilirubin (2 mg/dl) was observed. (3) Bilirubin concentration in the brain tissue of the j/j rats increased from 1.55 to 3.64 nmoles/g wet weight (about 2-fold) after novobiocin administration. (4) With all levels of Krebs cycle intermediates and related metabolites measured, a marked decrease both in pyruvate (54%) and malate (22%) concentrations was demonstrated in novobiocin-treated Gunn rats (j/j) compared with the non-treated. A lesser reduction of pyruvate in the j/+ rats and a significant increase of aspartate in the j/+ and Wistar rats were also observed. Although levels of most Krebs cycle intermediates in the non-treated j/j rats did not vary from those in the non-treated j/+, a striking difference was observed in pyruvate between the treated j/j and j/+ rats (37%,P (5) ATP, NAD and NADH remained unaltered in all groups of rats investigated, irrespective of novobiocin treatment. (6) No findings suggested that mitochondrial damage may be the primary event of experimental bilirubin encephalopathyin vivo." @default.
