This has resulted in a major detail being overlooked: the closed loops of the size dictated by the polypeptide chain flexibility, of which the globular proteins are actually built, remained unnoticed. This article describes the loop-and-lock structure of proteins, a thoroughly different picture. Consequently, new perspectives are opened for protein folding, determinants of protein stability and presentation of proteins as assemblies of standard elements. A proteomic code is suggested, whereby the proteins are viewed as linear combinations of a limited number of prototype sequence/structure loop elements. The polymer statistical revision of the very basics of protein structure challenges decades of efforts in protein research and provides a powerful basis for studies in protein evolution." @default.
