- W2058355909 abstract "Cryptosporidium parvum is a coccidial protozoan that causes diarrhea in immunocompetent and immunocompromised children. Whereas the illness usually is only mild to moderately severe in otherwise healthy children, the symptoms in immunocompromised patients often are severe and prolonged. Most cases of cryptosporidiosis occur sporadically; however, outbreaks of illness have occurred in day care centers. The most massive outbreak of cryptosporidiosis occurred in Milwaukee during 1993, when 403,000 individuals developed diarrhea because of a contaminated public water supply. Progress has been made in improving the sensitivity and specificity of diagnosing cryptosporidiosis. Although there is no well-established treatment for cryptosporidial infections and no drug has been found to be reproducibly curative, anecdotal reports and small controlled trials have shown that certain medications may be tried in certain children with cryptosporidiosis. This article reviews the clinical features of cryptosporidiosis in pediatric patients, with special focus on diagnosing and treating this intestinal parasitic infection. Copyright © 2000 by W.B.
