- W2058453892 abstract "Sumner, Adrian T.; Blackwell Publishing Ltd., Oxford, United Kingdom, 2003, 287 pp., ISBN 0-632-05407-7 (paperback), $69.95. This monograph is extremely well organized and superbly edited. The text consists of 18 chapters starting with a rationale of why one should study chromosomes and ending with a chapter on chromosomal engineering and artificial chromosomes. In between is a progression from mitosis, meiosis, and DNA content through chromatin and the features of chromosomes with extensive internal cross-referencing. All of the chapters have extensive citations so that at the end there are 35 pages of references. The text contains numerous illustrations and tables, approximately one on every page, all of which are in black-and-white, which does detract from the educational value of figures illustrating fluorescent tags. This, of course, does lower the cost of the text. Most chapters end with two to four websites related to the chapter's topic. The preface clearly indicates the author's intended audience, “ … advanced undergraduate and post-graduate students who … will have a basic knowledge of chromosomes…. ” The preface also shows some degree of bitterness toward molecular biology because of its threat to swamp other areas of biology but then recognizes the contributions of the field by stating “ … recently there has been an upsurge in chromosome studies, stimulated by these advances in molecular biology but accompanied by the realization that the arrangement of biological molecules could not, on its own, explain all biological phenomena.” This is, in fact, a somewhat ironic statement because much of the book describes differences between thin or thick lines, changes in shapes, or positional descriptions and rarely is able to assign a function to these observations. A further difficulty with the book is the extensive use of acronyms. While the author is very conscientious about defining each term at its first use, the following text often uses so many acronyms that one has to keep going back to try to find the original definition. It would have been useful to have had a section listing the acronyms used to make it easier to find these terms. Overall the text is very well written, current, and covers a very wide range of topics dealing with chromosomes." @default.
