- W2058590944 abstract "Chemical changes during diagenesis in foraminiferal oozes have been studied in five cores from the hydrothermally active spreading centre of the Galapagos Rift. Shifts of concentrations of elements such as Mn, Co, Cu, Ni, Zn and Ba are related to changes of Eh potential in the range from +0.33 to −0.07 V. Mn, Co and Cu are strongly mobilized in the reduction zone and reprecipitated as hydroxides near the sediment—water interface. The REE distribution patterns of these oxide-rich sediments are very similar to those in the base metal-poor diagenetically formed Mn-nodules. During diagenesis several elements (REE, Co, Sb, Ba and Zn) were redistributed between carbonate and non-carbonate phases, whereas others were not (Fe, Sc, Th and Cr). Although the composition of these sediments may be attributed to diverse sources, convincing evidence supporting a hydrothermal impact comes from the Sb concentrations." @default.
