- W2058756712 abstract "Abstract The accumulation and distribution of 15N-labelled fertilizer by wheat grown on a red-brown earth in the Goulburn-Murray Irrigation region was investigated in 1984 and 1986. 15N fertilizer was applied to microplots in a larger field experiment involving the factorial combination of irrigation and N. Irrigation treatments included a rainfed control (Rf) and irrigation on a weekly interval (Iw) commencing in the spring. Nitrogen was applied at 0 or 150 kg N ha−1 at sowing and 15N fertilizer (20–22 kg N ha−1) was applied at tillering, early-boot and heading. Microplots were sampled at maturity in 1984 and at anthesis and maturity in 1986. Nitrogen applications at sowing had no effect on the 15N recovery in the crop or in the grain. Of the 15N applied in top-dressing, 40–50% was recovered by the crop in 1986 and 1984, and similar efficiencies were found at each growth-stage in both years. The exception was the addition at heading to treatment Rf, where crop recovery ranged from 20 to 30%. Under favourable soil moisture (irrigation), 88% of the 15N recovered in the above-ground crop was assimilated within 15 days of top-dressing application in 1986. Total-N data indicated a significant post-anthesis uptake of N from the soil in treatment Iw, but no uptake in Rf. In Iw, about 60% of the N recovered in the grain was derived from the stem and leaves. No differences were found in the total recovery of 15N in the soil/plant system in each year. Total recoveries were 65% and 80% in 1984 and 1986, respectively. Furthermore, there was no difference between recoveries at anthesis and maturity in 1986, and time of application had no effect on the 15N balance. Residual fertilizer in the soil ranged from 12 to 18% in 1984 and from 30 to 40% in 1986 for all treatments, with the exception of the addition at heading to treatment Rf, where the values were 40% and 60%, respectively. Delaying the top-dressing until heading under rainfed conditions resulted in low (18–30%) plant uptake and inefficient use of the fertilizer N." @default.
