- W2058871567 abstract "The mystery of Dementia is gradually unfolding. The expectation is that in the near future, dementia will be cured. As we advance to this expectation, it is very significant that in all ramifications, the treatment of dementia should be holistic in nature. One area, that need be focused on in order to successfully treat the symptoms of dementia is understanding of culture and individual's perceptions as it relate to their psychosocial wellbeing. Though individuals with the diagnosis of dementia may share similar symptoms and with similar expecations, the treatment of these individuals will vary greatly on the level of understanding and the interpretation of the culture and background information available in the hands of the professionals caring for these individuals. The relevance of culture to understanding and treating individuals with dementia cannot be overemphasized. Treating people with dementia requires specialized trainings; one of such training is cultural compentence and sensitivity. Understanding of the culture of dementia individuals in their care curriculum is significant in the elimination of behaviors of dementia. For instance, most long term care facilities serve meals to their dementia residents with strudy plastic plates. However, it may be amazing to know that an individual of an African descent especially a male, may not consume the meal because it is served in a plastic plate! No matter the kinds of intervention that may be used in the behavior management theory, this individuals may starve to death for a very obvious but overlooked reason that is solely culturally motivated. In Africa, adult males are usually serve with a metal or glass plate. This is indicative of respect and honour to the elderly. Therefore, when an African dementia patient in a typically long term setting in the United States, is labeled as a “difficult resident,” such label becomes unjustified. The management of the symptoms of dementia is a very challenging task. However, the behavioral symptoms of dementia should not be a laborious task if the application of the individuals culture and values are incorporated into the plan of care for that individual." @default.
