- W2058876887 abstract "TAB2-PD-02 Introduction: IAP from biomass fuels is a global health problem especially in developing countries, where solid fuels are typically burnt in open fires. The Randomised Exposure Study of Pollution Indoors and Respiratory Effects (RESPIRE)–Guatemala investigates health benefits from reducing IAP with improved stoves with chimneys (Planchas). Wider dissemination of the Planchas among women and children is more likely to success if these interventions are seen as desirable and bring tangible benefits to their lives. Methods: RESPIRE–Guatemala was carried out in Mayan Indian households from October 2002 to December 2004; 504 women participated. They were randomized to either receive a Plancha or to continue using their traditional open fires. The women took part in health and exposure assessments on a regular basis. From September to November 2004, a self-perceived health questionnaire was administered to 168 women: 80 control women and 88 women using Planchas [mean age (SD) intervention = 26.9 (7.3), control = 27.9 (6.8)]. They were asked how they perceived their health at that time and before the study began and how the Plancha had changed their lives. If a woman mentioned smoke reduction in the kitchen as a positive effect, the fieldworker asked if she thought that this reduction had influenced her or her children's health. Results: Women in both groups regarded their health as good. After a mean time of 16.3 months, 52.3% of the women in the intervention group considered that their health had improved, compared with 23.5% of the controls (P = 0.0001). Most intervention women (94.3%) mentioned smoke reduction as an effect of the Plancha. While 83.0% of the women thought that this reduction had improved their own health, only 53.4% considered that it had influenced their children's health. Reported improvements in health from the Plancha included a reduction of sore eyes (55.7%), of headaches (17.0%), and of sore throats (10.2%) among others. For children, improved health was recognized as a reduction in crying (40.9%) and of sore eyes (9.1%). The Plancha also improved their cooking position (81.8%), shortened the cooking time (65.9%), and made them less worried about burns in children (53.4%). Main complaints about the Plancha were a longer time cutting wood (14.8%) and that it was colder inside the kitchen (8%). Conclusions: Women in this population have a long tradition of using open fires, which is not easy to change. Self-perceived health improvements are likely to promote the demand and use of the Planchas." @default.
