The protozoan Cryptosporidium can parasite many animal species including man. Its life cycle develops within the brush border of the host cell (intestinal epithelium) and is completed by the development of oocysts. These are sporulated and infectious when discharged and resistant to most commonly used disinfectants. Human cryptosporidiosis is a widespread disease. Immunocompetent persons particulary young children usually have a self limited acute diarrhea. Immunocompromised patients infected with Cryptosporidium complain of a severe and chronic diarrhea, often complicated with malnutrition and electrolytic disorders. The evolution can be aggravated by the dissemination of the parasite in the liver, the bladder, the pancreas and the lungs." @default.
