- W2058904073 abstract "The profunda femoris artery is the primary source of blood flow to the thigh and is the major collateral route for supply to the knee and lower part of the leg when the superficial femoral and popliteal arteries are obstructed. (Figure 1.) Fortunately, the profunda femoris artery is less frequently involved in the atherosclerotic process than is the common or superficial femoral artery [1,2]. However, Martin and co-workers [3] have shown that when arteriosclerosis obliterans involves the profunda femoris artery, the disease is located at the orifice or in the proximal portion in 74 per cent of the cases. This is best appreciated by a lateral angiogram. Bypass procedures from the aorta to the femoral artery and from the femoral to the popliteal and calf vessels have been the primary technics employed for revascularization of the lower limb. Procedures to restore flow to the lower extremity, utilizing the profunda femoris artery in the presence of obstruction of the superficial femoral artery, have been neglected. Recently, the value of this approach in revascularization of the limb when the appropriate anatomic circumstances are present has been emphasized [3,4]. This paper reviews our experience with various technics for repair of the profunda femoris artery and points out the place of profunda femoris artery repair in revascularization of the lower extremity." @default.
