- W2058955080 abstract "The response limitations of microphones imposed by both finite size and sensing-element dynamics has been examined in order to assess the utility of transducers currently being used in the measuremert of sonic-boom phenomena, ballistic pressures, and shock-wave motion in aerodynamic flows. Experimentation includes the application of the expansion tunnel and shock-tube technology to generate “weak” progressive shock waves. Transducers are both flush mounted and subjected to normal incidence shock-wave motion in the expansion tunnel. The rise-time characteristic of the transducer is also measured with a simulated transient pressure generated by application of the electrostatic actuator. Experimentation utilizing these techniques provides a direct comparison of the finite-size effect and the basic limitations in transducer rise-time response contributed by the sensing-element dynamics. Anomalous behavior of nonflush diaphragms is demonstrated by the experiments as well as the effect on rise-time characteristics created by the microphone protecting grid. Analysis which complements this experimentation is reviewed in the material presented. [Work supported by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, Langley Research Center.]" @default.
