- W2059013304 abstract "A semiconductor detector telescope has been constructed to identify high energy singly charged particles. The telescope is based on the method of selecting the smallest of five pulses produced by a charged particle passing through five lithium-drifted silicon detectors of thickness 2.64 mm. Using a single detector of such thickness, pions are distinguishable from positrons in the momentum range only up to 160 MeV/c and protons from pions only up to 900 MeV/c, and the resolution is about 22% with minimum ionizing particles; while our detector telescope gives a resolution of about 11% and can distinguish pions from positrons and protons from pions up to 190 MeV/c and 1200 MeV/c, respectively. The author also proposes to use such a telescope comprising suitably thick detectors as a charge identifier for heavy primary cosmic rays. The estimated resolution is 1.2 units of charge, which is almost twice as good as the resolution of 2 units of charge for nuclear emulsions." @default.
