• W2059164057 abstract "Cigarette smoking is an important cause of morbidity and mortality throughout the world (1). Young people and adults take up the habit despite their awareness of its potentially harmful effects. These include chronic bronchitis, emphysema, cor pulmonale, respiratory failure, acute myocardial infarction and peripheral vascular disease. In addition, the adverse effects of maternal smoking on the foetus are becoming well known (2,3). By 1984, 16% of total deaths were attributed to smoking, of which two-thirds were in men. In a survey conducted by the General Household Survey (GHS), 8% of smokers and 4% ofnon-smokers felt there was no connection between smoking and particular types of illness. Only 27% of smokers felt such connections were strong. About 90% of people in this group, only recognized a link between smoking, coughing and bronchitis (4). While 86% of tobacco is smoked, 13% is chewed and 1% used as a powdered snuff(12). This pattern of use effects morbidity and mortality. Tobacco-related cancer affects the mouth, pharynx, larynx and oesophagus and unlike in the West is more common than lung cancer (12). Hong Kong is the gateway to Asia for the import of tobacco products from the west (13). Thus, while sales are falling by 1% per annum in the West, consumption in developing countries is increasing on average by 2% per annum (WHO press release,1988). It is expected that sales in Asia will have increased by 18 % in the year 2000 (13). Such sales have resulted in the import of western type diseases, chronic ill health and death to people who have little knowledge of the dangers of smoking.
