- W205916823 abstract "ABSTRACT Fully reverse low cycle fatigue tests were conducted on five aluminium alloys which can be divided into three groups depending on the microstructure and strengthening mechanism. They are the age hardening alloys 6061, 6351 and 7005, the solid solution strengthened 5083 alloy and finally the dislocation and sub-grain boundaries strengthened 1200 alloy. The back stress variation was investigated along the stable hysteresis loop which formed typically after about 10% of the fatigue life. Two components of the back stresses were introduced to account for the rapid release followed by the observed gradual build-up of those stresses. The negative component of the back stresses, accumulated from the previous half-cycle, is expected to assist the deformation, while the positive term, generated during the current deformation cycle, is expected to oppose it. The stability of the back stresses was studied by allowing the stress to relax at various locations along the hysteresis loop before unloading and reverse loading. The reverse flow curves were compared with those obtained without stress relaxation. The results are discussed in terms of the relief of the internal stresses by a softening process associated with the rearrangements in the dislocation configuration." @default.
