- W2059293246 abstract "It is recognized that experimental results are, in part, a function of the selection of a dependent variable. Relative to verbal conditioning research, particularly research employing a Taffel-type task (Taffel, 1955), numerous alternative strategies may be, and have been, used to transform raw operant frequency counts into response measures (RMs) chat are more amenable to parametric analyses. This condition suggests that a portion of the discrepancies observed in verbal conditioning research might be attributable to choice of RM. This investigation attempted to assess the relative efficiency of 15 RMs that can be generated from a Taffel-type situation. Relative efficiency was defined as the extent to which a RM demonstrates a greater conditioning effect when compared with others, all things being equal. Data on 80 Ss (frequency of reinforced self-reference response for each of four 20-trial-blocks) were obtained from a previous study (Kennedy, Cook, & Brewer, in press). Ss comprised two groups: (a) a group (N = 40) who apparently demonstrated conditioning and (b) a group (N = 40) who clearly failed to manifest a conditioning effect. From raw frequency/block data, 15 different RMs were generated for Ss. Essenrially, the 15 RMs can be loosely classified into one of three categories on the basis of the arithmetic operations used in their derivation: (a) simple conditioning gain scores from the base period (Trial Block 1) to later conditioning trial blocks, (b) per cent increase in operant production from base period, and (c) ratio gain scores from base period to later blocks.' One-way analyses of variance between group means, with associated eta coefficients (?), were calculated for each RM. Results indicated that selected RUs were not equally efficient. In particular, Rhls based on per cent increase were noticeably less efficient while (a) simple frequency gain between Trial Blocks 1 and 4 and (b) operant/total ratio gain also between Blocks 1 and 4 appeared maximally efficient." @default.
