- W2059336312 abstract "Background : The Mayday group reported the results of a new technique of metatarsal osteotomy in 1997, and the authors claimed that such a technique has the advantage of simplicity, no shortening of the metatarsals, no risk of dorsal displacement of the distal fragment, and a low incidence of metatarsalgia. Objective : We performed an independent series using the same technique to evaluate the claim from the Mayday group. Methods : We evaluated the outcome of 26 feet of 24 patients who had hallux valgus correction using the Mayday technique. The outcome was measured by post-operative level of pain, presence of metatarsalgia, cosmetic satisfaction, ease of shoe fitting and overall satisfaction. We also evaluated the improvement of hallus valgus angle, intermetatarsal angle, joint congruency and the amount of metatarsal shortening. Results : Our results showed very similar outcome as the original study, with great pain improvement, good cosmetic and overall satisfaction. Radioloigcally, there was significant improvement of the hallux valgus angle, intermetatarsal angle, and joint congruency; but there was also a significant 1st metatarsal shortening. The overall outcome, however, had not been compromised. Conclusion : We concluded that this is a reproducible and effective treatment for hallux valgus deformity." @default.
