No carbon exchange took place between labeled carbon monoxide and dioxide up to 400/sup 0/C. Similar IR absorption bands suggested that both exchange reactions proceed via the same carbonate and bicarbonate intermediates, with formation of the intermediates from labeled carbon dioxide being rate-determining. Removal of reactive oxygen as water during alumina dehydration was confirmed experimentally.
