- W2059524414 abstract "The structures and substances involved in cell adhesion were studied by electron microscopy of psoriatic epidermis. Intercellular deposits of material in the stratum corneum are thought to correspond to polysaccharide cementing substances present in excessive amounts in this desease. The structure of desmosomes in all layers of the epidermis is considered normal. Keratinosomes (membrane-coating granules) and intercellular material derived from them are also apparently normal. As in normal epidermis, cornified cells in psoriasis possess a “thickened” plasma membrane. The “thickening” seems to result from an intracellular process during cornification rather than from the deposition of intercellular material. A well-developed surface coat is present in the stratum germinativum and stratum spinosum, where its presence is believed to be related to the exchange of metabolites with the fluids in the extensive intercellular space. “Large” cytoplasmic vesicles (0.7–1 μ in diameter) of the deeper epidermal layers may be involved in the formation of specialized cell surfaces. A hypertrophied Golgi region is present in cells of the stratum germinativum and stratum spinosum. Its prominence is believed to be correlated with production of extraordinary amounts of polysaccharide and to reflect at least one significant defect in this disease." @default.
