- W2059555818 abstract "The mechanism of wear of metal-evaporated video tapes, consisting of an ultrathin Co-Ni layer on a poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) foil, was investigated by optical and scanning electron microscopy. The wear system used was a commercial video tape recorder. The microscopic observations were compared with simultaneous measurements of coefficient of friction and the output signal of magnetic information. A correlation could be derived between the total operating time of the head drum, the friction and the lifetime of the tape. Observed mechanisms are crack formation in the magnetic layer, detachment of individual particles and the abrasive action of the detached wear debris. Many tapes contain pre-existing cracks. Under frictional loading these cracks grow in the metallic layer and subsequently become separated from the polymeric substrate. In the next stage these particles form wear debris which causes grooves to be formed. This, in turn, forms new cracks. Further detachment of the layer at the groove will cause separation of the magnetic layer and finally the destruction of the magnetic information in the central range of the tape. If no fabrication-induced cracks pre-exist, the following defects will induce wear with a somewhat higher delay: dust particles and associated shadow zones, wrinkles and internal microcracks." @default.
