Two samples of the ascidian D. molle (grey and brown forms), Prochloron sp. cells, and a plankton sample have been analysed for carotenoids, fatty acids and sterols in a study directed towards determining energy flow in the symbiotic prochlorophyte-ascidian system. 2. 2. The near identity of carotenoid compositional patterns between the Prochloron sp. and the sample of D. molle taken together with the relative absolute concentrations suggest a 2–3% biomass contribution of prochlorophyte to the ascidian samples. 3. 3. The data from sterol analyses suggest that the prochlorophyte does not biosynthesize its own sterols. 4. 4. A fatty acid analysis of D. molle samples show 16:0, 16:1ω7, 20:4ω6 and 20:5ω3 to be the major components, and there is reason to believe that the polyunsaturated fatty acids may be derived, at least in part, from a plankton food source. 5. 5. Sterol analyses of the ascidian samples suggest that this animal can reduce Δ5-sterols, which may also be derived through a plankton diet, to 5α-stanols, and can convert Δ5-sterols to the Δ7 isomers." @default.
