The mammalian immune system has evolved to protect the individual from a diverse array of microorganisms. Specificity and memory are properties of the more advanced immune system, the components of which are the B and T lymphocytes and accessory cells. The immune response does not unfold after a simple interaction of antigen and immunocompetent T or B lymphocytes; it is the result of the activation of an elaborate network of interacting cells occurring in specific microenvironments. Numerous investigations in recent years have focused on the developmental pathways of T and B cells and their subsets and on the repertoire of antigen reactivities. There have been detailed analyses of antigen processing and presentation, of the biochemical pathways leading to cell activation and of the effector molecules produced. This new knowledge will eventually allow to steer immune responses towards the control of autoimmunity and improved vaccination procedures." @default.
