The system is based on the electrostatic acceleration of particles to high velocity so that their impact with a target is energetic enough to vaporize particulate and target material. Preliminary results are presented for particles having one unit of charge accelerated through 125 kV. Craters produced by 0.02, 0.05 and 0.2 μm NaCl particles theoretically travelling at 2.4, 0.8 and 0.4 km s−1, respectively, are shown. Particle kinetic energy and the energy required to ionize the particle are calculated and compared to show what charge states and acceleration voltages are needed for single particle elemental analysis." @default.
