- W2059968477 abstract "Chronic pain is a major problem and its management can be difficult under the best of circumstances. When an individual has suffered with chronic pain for a period of time, sometimes years, they utilize many methods for relieving their discomfort, or at least holding it at bay, through both pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapies. When these individuals enter the acute care setting, whether planned or unplanned, their normal chronic pain management regimen may become disrupted and difficult to continue, potentially leading to the exacerbation of their chronic pain symptoms or an inability to adequately meet their current pain relief needs. An extensive review of the literature has revealed many articles that describe different aspects of relieving chronic pain or addressing acute pain, but very little research was found regarding the management of chronic pain in the acute care setting. In other words, how are health care providers ensuring that the unique combination of methods that the patient uses at home are included in their care planning while in the hospital? Are these patients using the same pain scales as a person who doesn’t experience and live with chronic pain on a daily basis? What can providers do to ensure that the chronic pain patient’s discomfort is addressed and maintained according to what “works at home” in addition to what other methods of pain relief might need to be superimposed upon these therapies to relieve their acute pain needs? In order to encourage best practices regarding the management of chronic pain in the acute care setting, it would prove helpful to disseminate what expert health care providers and researchers are currently recommending, using a holistic approach as a foundation, for the development of a protocol for the management of chronic pain in the acute care setting." @default.
